Behold the People: R.C. Hickman Photography Exhibit

In partnership with the University of Texas and the City of Dallas Cultural Affairs Commission, BEST is hosting an exhibition featuring the work of renowned Dallas photographer R. C. Hickman. Hickman chronicled news, celebrities, and the daily lives of Dallas’ African American community in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. But he is best known for capturing the disparate condition of Black schools in Texas and the South. His photography was used by the late Thurgood Marshall to support oral arguments in landmark school desegregation cases.

UT history professor Dr. Sarah Sonner installing "Behold the People" photo exhibit at Dallas City Hall. On display through the month of February. Hickman would have been 100 years old. This is the 25th anniversary of UT publishing a collection of his work by the same name (Behold the People). Chair of UT's Briscoe Center, Dr Don Carlson will be at the exhibit opening. This is the first time UT has shown the work in Dallas. Hickman donated his photo collection to their archives.
